In 1965, Lew DeWitt — the quiet one, the poet of the group — was hospitalized with a condition doctors couldn’t immediately diagnose. Lying in that sterile white room, staring at the ceiling for days, he started scribbling lyrics on the back of hospital napkins. “Counting flowers on the wall, that don’t bother me at all.” The other three brothers visited every night. When Lew finally read the full lyrics aloud, Harold Reid laughed so hard he cried. Then he just cried. They all knew the song wasn’t really about boredom — it was about a man pretending everything was fine when nothing was. Lew recovered. They recorded the song.
