RORY FEEK IS SPENDING HIS SECOND WEDDING ANNIVERSARY IN A CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL ROOM IN AUSTIN, AND HE SAYS HE’S MORE CERTAIN THAN EVER THAT HE’S A LUCKY MAN. Two years ago this morning, he and Rebecca were getting ready for their wedding in Montana. By late afternoon they stood holding hands under a timber-frame pavilion in front of hundreds of friends, and Rory did something that gave his bride a scare of an entirely different kind. Neither of them, he admits, knew what they were signing up for. Since Indiana’s heart trouble put her back in the hospital a few weeks ago, Rebecca hasn’t left the girl’s side — a round-the-clock nurse who colors, reads, does math problems and finds a hundred small ways to make a 12-year-old comfortable in a very uncomfortable place. She still finds time to leave Rory little notes to find. Last night, he and Indy walked out to the healing garden and picked flowers for Mama, which is what Indy calls her now. Marrying her was Indy’s idea in the first place. The anniversary may come down to cafeteria trays and a game of Uno. Rory says it’s still special, because they’re all together. Whatever it was he did at that altar in Montana, Rebecca has been answering it every day since.
