Introduction to “You’ll Always Be My Baby” by Alan Jackson
In 2017, country music legend Alan Jackson celebrated a joyful milestone when his daughter Maddie married Ben Selecman. However, just under a year later, tragedy struck. On September 12, 2018, Ben died unexpectedly after suffering a traumatic brain injury while assisting a woman onto a boat in West Palm Beach, Florida. His untimely passing deeply affected the Jackson family, particularly Alan, who had formed a close bond with his son-in-law.
During preparations for Maddie’s wedding, she had asked her father to write a song for their father-daughter dance. That request led Jackson to write “You’ll Always Be My Baby,” a heartfelt ballad that would later take on deeper meaning. Alan shared that he played an early demo of the song for Ben in his garage, recalling that Ben became visibly emotional and called the song “perfect.” That moment remains one of Jackson’s most cherished memories.
Though all three of Jackson’s daughters would eventually use the song, it holds particular significance because of Ben’s reaction and the sorrow that followed his death. Jackson postponed an album he was working on at the time, later revealing in an interview how angry and disoriented he felt after losing someone he saw not just as family, but as the son he never had.
“You’ll Always Be My Baby” was eventually included on Jackson’s 2021 album Where Have You Gone. The song now stands as a powerful tribute—both to the father-daughter bond and to the memory of a young man whose life ended far too soon. For Jackson, it remains one of the most personal and emotionally resonant pieces in his musical career.
