Marie Osmond Cuts Off Kids’ Inheritance, Says Wealth Breeds Laziness

In a bold and honest revelation, legendary entertainer Marie Osmond has shared that she has no intention of leaving her estimated $20 million fortune to her seven children. The 63-year-old singer and television personality, who rose to fame as part of the iconic Osmond family, believes that handing down wealth can do more harm than good.

In a recent interview with Us Weekly, Osmond spoke candidly about her decision. “Honestly, why would you enable your child to not try to be something?” she said. “I don’t know anybody who becomes anything if they’re just handed money.” She emphasized that the drive to work, grow, and finish what you start is something she has always valued—and expects from her children: Stephen, Rachel, Jessica, Brandon, Brianna, Matthew, and Abigail.

Osmond, who has built her career not only through music but also television and entrepreneurship (including designing dolls), said that inheriting wealth can lead to laziness and entitlement. “That’s one of my rules with my kids,” she explained. “If you start it, you finish it.”

This isn’t the first time Marie has addressed the topic. Back in 2020, during an appearance on The Talk, she said, “You do a great disservice to your children to just hand them a fortune because you take away the one most important gift you can give your children—and that’s the ability to work.”

Instead of leaving her wealth to her children, Marie plans to donate it to charitable causes she supports, choosing purpose and impact over privilege. “I worked hard, and I’m going to spend it all and have fun with my husband,” she added with a smile.

Marie’s decision may raise eyebrows, but it reflects her strong values—encouraging independence, work ethic, and pride in earning one’s own success.
