Introduction
“Massachusetts,” released by the Bee Gees in 1967, marked a significant milestone in the band’s career, becoming their first number one hit in the United Kingdom and topping charts in numerous countries.
The song was penned by brothers Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb during a tour in the United States. Interestingly, at the time of writing, the Bee Gees had never visited Massachusetts; they were inspired by the state’s name and its phonetic appeal. The lyrics narrate a sense of homesickness, reflecting a desire to return home from San Francisco, which was then synonymous with the counterculture movement. This theme served as a subtle counterstatement to the prevailing “flower power” anthems of the era.
Initially, “Massachusetts” was intended for the Australian group The Seekers. However, after failing to connect with them, the Bee Gees decided to record the song themselves. The recording sessions took place at IBC Studios in London between August 9 and 17, 1967, with the orchestral arrangement crafted by Bill Shepherd, which Barry Gibb later praised as one of Shepherd’s finest works.
Upon its release, “Massachusetts” achieved remarkable success. It became the first non-Japanese song to top Japan’s Oricon Singles Chart and sold over five million copies worldwide. In the United States, it peaked at number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song’s popularity was further cemented when it was voted third in ITV’s 2011 special, “The Nation’s Favourite Bee Gees Song.”
“Massachusetts” not only showcased the Bee Gees’ songwriting prowess but also solidified their status as international pop icons. Its blend of melancholic lyrics and harmonious melodies continues to resonate with audiences, reflecting the universal theme of longing for home.

🎵 Let’s sing along with the lyrics! 🎤
Feel I’m going back
To Massachusetts
Something’s telling me
I must go home
And the lights all went out down in Massachusetts
The day I left
Her standing on her own
Tried to hitch a ride
To San Francisco
Gotta do the things
I wanna do
And the lights all went down in Massachusetts
They brought me back
To see my way with you
Talk about the life
In Massachusetts
Speak about the people
I have seen
And the lights all went down in Massachusetts
And Massachusetts
Is one place I have seen
(I will remember Massachusetts)
I will remember Massachusetts
(I will remember Massachusetts)
I will remember Massachusetts
(I will remember Massachusetts)
I will remember Massachusetts
