Before they were country legends, The Statler Brothers were just four guys from Staunton, Virginia, singing in churches and praying for a break. They got one when Johnny Cash hired them as his opening act. But the road nearly killed them before fame ever arrived. In 1965, Lew DeWitt — the quiet one, the poet of the group — was hospitalized with a condition doctors couldn’t immediately diagnose.
