Alan Jackson Opens Up About Worsening Health: “I Don’t Want People to Think I’m Drunk on Stage”

Country music legend Alan Jackson has recently shared an emotional and candid update about his declining health, which is now significantly affecting his ability to perform. In a heartfelt video posted on YouTube, he publicly spoke for the first time about the hereditary condition he’s been battling—Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT).

“I’ve been reluctant to talk about this publicly, but I think it’s time to be honest with my fans,” Alan said. “I don’t want people to think I’m drunk on stage.”

CMT is a degenerative nerve disease that affects the nerves and muscles in the arms and legs. Though it’s not fatal, it progressively impairs mobility and muscle control over time. Alan revealed that he inherited the condition from his father and is now experiencing increasingly noticeable symptoms.

“It’s affecting my balance, especially when I’m standing in front of the microphone. I feel very uncomfortable performing,” he shared. “I know I look unsteady on stage, but it’s not because I’m out of control—it’s because of this disease.”

Despite the challenges, Alan emphasized that he doesn’t want to come across as a “complaining celebrity.” He expressed deep gratitude for his life and career and said he doesn’t take his condition as something to lament.

“I’ve had a beautiful life and career, and I know others go through much worse,” he said. “This isn’t something I would usually complain about.”

He also reflected on his approach to performing in the future. While he hasn’t made a final decision about continuing to tour, Alan said he hopes to follow in the footsteps of country legends like Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, and Loretta Lynn—artists who kept performing as long as they could.

“I never wanted to do a big retirement tour like some artists,” he said. “I always admired the ones who just kept going as long as they wanted and were able. I hope I can do the same—if my health allows it.”

Though his body may be weakening, Alan Jackson’s passion for music and love for his fans remain as strong as ever.
