Willie Nelson Gets Real About Death: “I Did What I Came Here to Do”

At 91 years old, while most people have long retired, country music legend Willie Nelson continues to pursue his passion. With the release of his 76th solo album Last Leaf on the Tree, he once again proves the enduring spirit of a true artist—one who has contributed to over 150 albums throughout a career spanning seven decades.

In a recent interview with the Associated Press, Nelson spoke candidly and emotionally about aging, death, and the legacy he hopes to leave behind. Earlier this year, fans were concerned when he had to cancel several shows due to health issues. But after a brief period of rest, as advised by doctors, he made a triumphant return to the stage, showing his trademark resilience.

Willie also reflected on the recent passing of his close friend, fellow country legend Chris Kristofferson, who died at the age of 88. “He was a great songwriter who left us with so many beautiful songs to sing. We had a lot of fun together—music, movies, life. Losing him was really sad,” Nelson shared.

His new album, which touches on themes of love and death, offered an opportunity for introspection. “I’m 91 now, so I’m not too worried about dying. I feel fine, I don’t hurt anywhere. I take pretty good care of myself,” he said. “Physically, I feel like I’m in good shape—mentally, well, that’s another story,” he added with a familiar sense of humor.

When asked how he hopes to be remembered, Nelson responded simply, “I had a good time, and I did what I came here to do—make music.”

Last Leaf on the Tree is now available on all major streaming platforms, a powerful reminder that even at 91, Willie Nelson continues to share music and inspiration with the world..
