Indiana was born in 2014 and was diagnosed with a ventricular septal defect (VSD), a hole in the wall separating the chambers of her heart. For years, doctors monitored the condition because such defects can sometimes close on their own. But by early 2026, doctors determined that the problem was causing complications and that surgery was necessary.
In June, at age 12, Indy underwent open-heart surgery in Austin, Texas. Rory later shared that the procedure successfully closed the hole and addressed related blockages, with doctors expecting her to make a full recovery. The emotional weight of the moment was immense for the family, especially as Indy had expressed her fear before the operation and hoped for a miracle.
Her journey, however, did not end with the first successful surgery. Weeks later, Indy experienced a serious complication that required emergency treatment after fluid accumulated around her heart. She was taken back to the children’s hospital in Austin, where doctors performed emergency surgery. After an additional hospitalization, she was eventually cleared to return home in July.
