Today, September 9, we remember a woman whose voice was gentle, whose heart was enormous, and whose music continues to live long after she left this world.
Born Joey Marie Martin in Alexandria, Indiana, Joey grew up surrounded by music, often singing alongside her father. Her journey eventually led her to Nashville, where she met Rory Feek—and together they built something far more beautiful than a music career. They built a life.
As Joey + Rory, they gave country music something rare: warmth, honesty, faith, and harmonies that felt like home. Their songs never needed to shout. They simply stayed with you.
Joey became a mother to Indiana in 2014, and even as cervical cancer changed the course of her life, she continued to face each day with remarkable courage. She was only 40 when she passed away on March 4, 2016—far too young, and far too soon.
But some voices don’t disappear when the singer is gone.
They remain in old records, quiet memories, family stories, and in the hearts of everyone who ever pressed play and felt understood.
Today, we don’t only remember how Joey left us.
