Some songs are beautiful because of their melody. Others become unforgettable because life gives their words a meaning no songwriter could ever have predicted. For Joey + Rory, “When I’m Gone” became one of those songs.
Written by Sandy Lawrence, a close friend of Joey’s, the song was inspired by Lawrence watching her mother die. She imagined the words she wished her mother could have given her—reassurance that the family would be all right after she was gone. Joey was deeply moved when she first heard it, saying the concept struck her in a way she had never experienced before.
Joey + Rory recorded “When I’m Gone” for their 2012 album His and Hers, with Joey delivering the song with extraordinary tenderness. The recording was released in 2012, and the couple also created a music video for it at their Tennessee farmhouse. Rory later recalled that, while making the video, they imagined a future in which Joey had died and Rory remained at the farm alone. At the time, they could never have known how closely that imagined story would resemble their real lives only a few years later.
Joey was diagnosed with cervical cancer, and she died on March 4, 2016, at age 40. Rory was holding her hand when she passed away. The song therefore took on a heartbreaking new meaning for listeners who had followed their story.
Today, “When I’m Gone” is remembered not simply as a country ballad, but as part of Joey Feek’s musical legacy—a song about love, loss, reassurance, and the hope that those left behind will keep living. Its words became painfully personal, turning an ordinary recording into something that continues to move listeners years later.
