Engelbert Humperdinck Shares the Heartbreaking Reality of Living With Alzheimer’s
For decades, Engelbert Humperdinck was celebrated as one of the great romantic voices of popular music, known for songs such as “Release Me” and “The Last Waltz.” But behind the famous performances was a deeply personal struggle that changed his family’s life: his wife Patricia Healey had been living with Alzheimer’s disease for years.
In June 2017, Humperdinck appeared on ITV’s Loose Women and spoke publicly about Patricia’s condition. He explained that she had been suffering from Alzheimer’s for around ten years, saying that discussing it publicly had been difficult. He also recalled how fans who had seen Patricia at his concerts could tell that something was wrong.
What made his story particularly moving was the tenderness with which he described continuing to perform while hoping Patricia could still recognize him. He said he would make sure she could see him from where she was, and that she did recognize him. His emotions also affected his performances, especially when he sang songs containing particularly tender lyrics.
The couple had married in 1964 and shared four children. Their relationship lasted for more than five decades. Patricia ultimately died in February 2021 at the age of 85 after her long battle with Alzheimer’s and later health complications.
Humperdinck later spoke about the experience again, including the importance of patience, routine, rest and compassionate caregiving. He also described how losing Patricia changed the way he understood and performed songs, giving familiar lyrics a much deeper emotional meaning.
His Loose Women appearance remains a poignant reminder that behind the glamorous image of a legendary performer was a husband facing one of life’s most painful realities: watching someone he loved deeply struggle with a devastating disease, while choosing to remain by her side with love, dignity and devotion.
