Today, October 10, we remember John Edward Prine, the legendary singer-songwriter whose honest words, gentle humor, and unforgettable melodies touched generations of music lovers. Born on October 10, 1946, in Maywood, Illinois, John would have celebrated his 80th birthday in 2026.

Before becoming one of folk and country music’s most respected storytellers, John lived an ordinary working life. He learned to play guitar at just 14, served in the U.S. Army, and later worked as a mailman in Chicago. Along the way, he wrote songs inspired by everyday people, quiet struggles, love, loneliness, and the beautiful imperfections of life.

His talent began attracting attention in Chicago’s folk music scene. Acclaimed film critic Roger Ebert praised his performances, while country music legend Kris Kristofferson became one of his early supporters.

In 1971, John released his self-titled debut album, introducing listeners to timeless songs such as “Sam Stone,” “Hello in There,” “Paradise,” and “Angel from Montgomery.” His songwriting stood apart because he could tell profound stories with simple words, compassion, and a touch of humor.

Throughout his remarkable career, John earned four Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. He also co-founded Oh Boy Records in 1981, helping preserve his artistic independence and commitment to authentic songwriting.

John passed away on April 7, 2020, at the age of 73, but his music never truly left us. His songs continue to comfort, challenge, and connect listeners across generations.
