“Leaning on the Everlasting Arms” is a cherished gospel hymn that has provided comfort and inspiration since its creation in 1887. The hymn was born from a moment of shared sorrow when Anthony J. Showalter, a music teacher and publisher, received letters from two former students, each mourning the loss of their wives. Seeking to console them, Showalter turned to Deuteronomy 33:27: “The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.” This verse inspired him to compose the hymn’s refrain and melody. He then collaborated with Elisha A. Hoffman, a prolific hymn writer, who penned the stanzas, completing the hymn.

The hymn was first published in 1887 in The Glad Evangel for Revival, Camp and Evangelistic Meeting Hymnal.  Its message of divine support and peace has resonated through generations, leading to numerous renditions across various musical genres. Alan Jackson included his rendition of the hymn in his 2006 gospel album Precious Memories, bringing its timeless message to a contemporary audience.

“Leaning on the Everlasting Arms” has also found its place in popular culture, featuring in films such as The Human Comedy (1943), The Night of the Hunter (1955), and True Grit (2010), where it significantly contributes to the soundtrack.  Its enduring appeal lies in its universal message of finding solace and strength in faith, making it a staple in both religious services and secular settings.
