“How Great Thou Art” is a revered Christian hymn that has touched countless hearts since its inception. The hymn’s origins trace back to 1885 in Mönsterås, Sweden, where pastor and poet Carl Boberg penned the original poem “O Store Gud” (“O Great God”). Boberg’s inspiration came during a walk home from church when he was caught in a sudden thunderstorm. As the storm subsided, he was moved by the serene beauty that followed, leading him to compose the poem reflecting on God’s majesty.

The poem was later set to a traditional Swedish melody and gained popularity in various European countries. In the early 1920s, British missionary Stuart K. Hine encountered the hymn while in Ukraine. Deeply moved, Hine translated it into English and added original verses, resulting in the version widely known today. The hymn gained significant prominence during Billy Graham’s 1957 New York Crusade, where it was performed extensively, solidifying its place in Christian worship.

Country music artist Alan Jackson delivered a notable rendition of “How Great Thou Art” in a live performance. His heartfelt interpretation resonated with audiences, showcasing the hymn’s enduring power and relevance. Jackson’s version is featured in his “Precious Memories” collection, a series dedicated to classic gospel hymns

The enduring legacy of “How Great Thou Art” lies in its profound lyrics and evocative melody, which continue to inspire and uplift listeners worldwide.
