Introduction
A Special Day at the Schoolhouse
January 21st – a peaceful morning, the sky clear and crisp, signaling a special day at a little schoolhouse in the countryside. As the day begins, a loving family goes through their familiar morning routine: lunch packed, Papa and their loyal dog Ranger ready, and little Indiana excited for school.
Just beside the farm lies the schoolhouse – where small hands once left colorful prints on the wall back in March. Indy quickly spots her own handprint, a reminder that another year of learning is coming to an end. Today is also a bittersweet one, as a few students are saying goodbye before moving away. There’s a gentle air of farewell in the room – filled with hugs, kind words, and promises to stay in touch.
Another special moment unfolds this morning: for the first time since winter 2015, the wood-burning stove is lit again. The comforting scent of burning wood fills the air, bringing back memories of Joey and the warmth of winters past. The garden shed that once belonged to Joey has been lovingly repurposed into Papa’s early morning workout space – humble but meaningful. Every morning, around 4 or 5 AM, he works out there before the day begins, not because of a New Year’s resolution, but a genuine desire to care for his health at 54.
Papa also reflects on his creative work – producing a television show about life on the farm. Though progress is slow, with only a handful of episodes finished, he remains hopeful. His workspace is just steps from the schoolhouse – a commute through fields, past the windmill Joey gave him for his 40th birthday, and by the little garden shed he gifted her for her 30th.
Back at school, a small farewell party is underway for Briggs and Easton. As the children gather to share their favorite memories, the room is filled with laughter and sweet words. One by one, they speak of kindness, cowboy hats, and joyful moments shared – painting a picture of true friendship and love.
The day ends with smiles, high-fives, and heartfelt goodbyes. As the sun sets over the peaceful farm, Papa looks around – grateful for this life of simple joys, meaningful work, and a community full of heart.
