On October 25, 2017, Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers stood together at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena, knowing they were sharing a stage for the final time. Their creative partnership had begun in 1983, when their collaborative recording written by the Bee Gees became an international pop and country number-one hit. For nearly four decades, the pair toured together, shared television specials, and maintained a close family bond off the road. During that 2017 Nashville finale, Parton stayed close to Rogers as his health slowed his movement, matching his steps and trading familiar stage jokes. At the close of their final duet, the two playfully dropped their microphones to the stage floor and walked off arm in arm. On March 20, 2020, Rogers passed away from natural causes at his home in Sandy Springs, Georgia, at age eighty-one. With public gatherings halted across the country, Parton sat at her piano at home, recording a simple video to speak about the thirty-seven years of friendship they had shared. Parton and Rogers built a rare partnership that never let public curiosity distract from real friendship.
