Long before the screaming crowds, the bright lights, and the worldwide fame, Tom Jones was simply a young man from Pontypridd who had fallen in love with his childhood sweetheart, Linda.
Their story began when they were teenagers in Wales. Jones later recalled falling for Linda when they were still very young, and the couple married in March 1957, shortly after Linda’s 16th birthday. Their son, Mark, was born the following month.
Soon afterward, Jones’s life changed dramatically. His singing career took off, and by 1965, “It’s Not Unusual” had made him an international star. Fame brought extraordinary success—and intense public attention to his personal life. Jones openly acknowledged that he had been unfaithful during their marriage, while Linda largely remained away from the spotlight.
Yet through decades of touring and fame, their relationship endured. Jones once described Linda as the most important person in his life and spoke about the shared childhood memories and Welsh humor that helped bind them together.
In April 2016, Linda died in Los Angeles after a short and severe battle with cancer. She was 75. Jones was at her bedside, and the loss profoundly affected him. Months later, he admitted that he had not known whether he would ever be able to sing again. Eventually, returning to the stage became part of how he coped with his grief. “Singing is saving my life,” he said.
