Introduction

Carol Vorderman has strongly criticised ITV’s decision to remove Sir Tom Jones from The Voice UK, calling it a “terrible decision” as the 86-year-old singer prepares to leave the programme after 13 years.
The Countdown star shared her reaction beneath Tom’s Instagram statement, in which the Welsh music legend revealed that his departure was not his choice.
Vorderman praised Tom’s continued ability as a live performer and made it clear that, in her view, his connection with The Voice remains as strong as ever.

Her message came shortly after Tom publicly addressed the circumstances surrounding his exit from the ITV singing competition.
Rather than suggesting he had voluntarily stepped away, Tom said ITV had made the decision and only informed him recently.
Tom Jones Reveals Why He Was Dropped
Tom explained that he still loved The Voice UK and had no desire to leave the show or its audience behind.
According to the singer, ITV cited financial difficulties connected to insurance as the reason for the change.
Tom also claimed that the broadcaster had subsequently described the overhaul as an attempt to “refresh” the programme with a new coaching line-up.
As a result, he said there would no longer be a full coaching chair available for him.
The alternative reportedly offered to Tom was a significantly reduced role in which he could appear on the programme without being involved from the beginning.
The singer made it clear that he was unhappy with the proposal.

He ended his statement with a pointed remark about his age and continued ability to perform, saying there was “never a good time to fire an 86-year-old who’s still pretty good at his job.”
Olly Murs Also Shows His Support

Carol Vorderman is not the only former colleague to defend Tom.
Olly Murs, who worked as a Voice UK coach from 2018 until 2023, also responded to Tom’s announcement.
“I know how much that show means to you mate. Absolute legend and one of the very best to ever sit in that chair,” Olly wrote.
His message is particularly significant given that Olly experienced his own unexpected departure from the programme in 2023.
The singer spent several years working alongside Tom before losing his coaching position.
The Voice UK Is Undergoing A Major Shake-Up

Tom’s departure appears to be part of a broader revamp of The Voice UK coaching panel.
The Sun previously reported that rapper Aitch is expected to replace McFly members Danny Jones and Tom Fletcher, who are reportedly leaving the programme.
Cheryl is also reportedly set to join the coaching line-up, while will.i.am and Kelly Rowland are expected to return.
The changes would give the long-running ITV singing competition a very different panel going forward.
For now, however, Tom’s exit has sparked strong reactions from both former colleagues and viewers, with Vorderman making her position particularly clear: she believes ITV has made a serious mistake by removing one of the show’s most recognisable coaches.
The Voice UK continues at 7 p.m. on ITV1 on Saturday, September 12, 2026.
