“Unchained Melody” became one of the most haunting songs associated with Elvis Presley’s final months, not because it was a new song for him, but because of the extraordinary circumstances surrounding his performance of it.

Written by Alex North with lyrics by Hy Zaret, “Unchained Melody” was originally published in 1955 and became a widely recorded standard. Elvis performed the song during his final period of touring, giving it a deeply personal quality through his voice and piano playing.

The best-known filmed performance comes from Rapid City, South Dakota, where Elvis performed on June 21, 1977. The concert was recorded and videotaped for the CBS television special Elvis in Concert. At the time, Elvis was visibly struggling with his health, and the footage presented a stark contrast between his physical appearance and the strength that remained in his singing voice.

During “Unchained Melody,” Elvis sat at the piano and delivered the song with striking emotional intensity. Rather than relying on the energetic stage movements that had characterized much of his earlier career, the performance placed the focus almost entirely on his voice. His phrasing, sustained notes, and emotional delivery gave the song a sense of vulnerability that has continued to move listeners.

The footage is especially poignant because Elvis would die less than two months later, on August 16, 1977, at Graceland. His final concert took place in Indianapolis on June 26, just five days after the Rapid City performance.

“Unchained Melody” therefore stands not simply as another Elvis performance, but as a remarkable document of an artist near the end of his life. Even when his health was failing, his ability to communicate emotion through music remained unmistakable. That contrast—physical exhaustion beside extraordinary vocal commitment—is what makes this performance so unforgettable.
