Elvis Presley – Unchained Melody

Introduction

“Unchained Melody,” composed by Alex North with lyrics by Hy Zaret in 1955, was originally crafted for the film Unchained. The song’s poignant lyrics convey deep longing and desire, resonating with audiences and leading to its status as one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century.

Elvis Presley, renowned as the “King of Rock ‘n’ Roll,” delivered a memorable rendition of “Unchained Melody” during a live performance on June 21, 1977, in Rapid City, South Dakota. This performance was part of his final concert tour, just two months before his passing in August 1977. The rendition was recorded for his last television special, capturing the raw emotion and depth of Presley’s vocal prowess during his later years.

In March 1978, RCA Records released a single based on this live recording, with “Softly, As I Leave You” as the B-side. The single achieved significant success, reaching No. 6 on the U.S. country charts and earning a Gold certification from Music Canada on July 10, 1986.

Another live version, recorded earlier on April 24, 1977, at Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor, Michigan, was included in Presley’s final album, Moody Blue. Both versions underwent studio overdubs with additional instruments before their release, enhancing the richness of the recordings.

Presley’s interpretation of “Unchained Melody” is often hailed as one of the standout moments of his late career, showcasing his enduring talent and emotional depth even during his final performances. This rendition continues to be celebrated by fans and music historians alike, reflecting the timeless appeal of both the song and the artist.
