Some songs change meaning as life changes. Engelbert Humperdinck’s “Everywhere I Go” is one of those deeply personal songs—because its connection to his wife, Patricia, became even more poignant after her death.

Humperdinck revealed that he wrote “Everywhere I Go” for Patricia around 30 years before speaking about it in a 2024 interview. The song appeared on his 1993 album Yours, with an arrangement by Bebu Silvetti.

Patricia had been part of Humperdinck’s life long before his international fame. They met when she was 17, married in 1964, and remained together for decades. Humperdinck has described her as a major source of support throughout his career and the mother of their four children.

Patricia died in February 2021 at the age of 85 after living with Alzheimer’s disease for more than a decade. Her death profoundly changed the way Humperdinck approached the songs he performed. He explained that after losing her, lyrics carried a different depth and meaning for him.

That transformation is especially moving when he sings “Everywhere I Go.” Humperdinck said he now dedicates the song to Patricia during his shows—and admitted that there are many nights when he cannot make it all the way through the performance because the emotion becomes overwhelming.

There is no need to add an invented story around the song. Its real history is already powerful: a song written for a wife during their lifetime became, years later, a way for a grieving husband to keep her memory present through music.

🎵 Sometimes a song does not say goodbye. Sometimes it simply says: I still carry you with me, everywhere I go.
