Introduction
Joey + Rory’s live rendition of “It Is Well With My Soul” is a poignant interpretation of a hymn born from profound personal tragedy. The song’s origins trace back to Horatio Spafford, a 19th-century Chicago lawyer and devout Presbyterian. In 1871, Spafford faced immense personal loss: his four-year-old son died of scarlet fever, and shortly thereafter, the Great Chicago Fire decimated his real estate investments, leading to significant financial hardship.
Seeking solace, Spafford planned a trip to Europe with his family in 1873. Due to unforeseen business obligations, he sent his wife, Anna, and their four daughters ahead on the SS Ville du Havre. Tragically, the ship collided with another vessel and sank rapidly, claiming the lives of all four daughters. Anna survived and sent Spafford a telegram bearing the words “Saved alone.”
As Spafford journeyed to reunite with his grieving wife, his ship passed near the location where his daughters had perished. It was during this voyage that he penned the hymn’s lyrics, reflecting a deep sense of peace amidst overwhelming sorrow.
The melody for “It Is Well With My Soul” was composed by Philip Bliss, a close associate of Spafford. The hymn was first published in 1876 and has since become a staple in Christian worship, symbolizing unwavering faith in the face of adversity.
Joey + Rory’s version, featured on their 2016 album “Hymns That Are Important to Us,” resonates deeply, especially considering Joey Feek’s own battle with terminal cancer during its recording. Their heartfelt performance underscores the hymn’s enduring message of hope and resilience.

Lyrics
When peace, like a river, attended my way
When sorrows like sea billows roll
Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say
It is well, it is well with my soul
It is well with my soul
It is well, it is well with my soul
My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought
My sin, not in part but the whole
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul
It is well with my soul
It is well, it is well with my soul
It is well, it is well with my soul
