“It Was a Guy’s World. I Felt a Bit Left Out” — Priscilla Presley on Life With Elvis
For decades, the world saw Priscilla Presley beside Elvis Presley—the legendary performer whose fame seemed almost larger than life. But behind the gates of Graceland, Priscilla has said that her experience was far more complicated than the glamorous image suggested.
In September 2025, while discussing her memoir Softly, As I Leave You: Life After Elvis with Stephen Colbert, Priscilla spoke candidly about the difficulty of living within Elvis’s world. She explained that she did not leave because she stopped loving him. Instead, she described the lifestyle surrounding him as difficult, especially as she found herself surrounded by an almost entirely male entourage. “It was a guy’s world,” she recalled, adding that she sometimes felt left out.
Priscilla met Elvis when she was only 14, married him at 21 in 1967, and became the mother of their daughter, Lisa Marie. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1973. Her memoir looks back not only on that relationship, but also on the process of discovering who she was beyond being Elvis Presley’s wife.
One important part of that journey was finding activities that belonged to her. Priscilla told Colbert that she began taking dance classes and going to the gym, eventually discovering confidence and a sense that she could build something of her own. That path later included acting and business.
Her story is therefore not simply about life beside a music legend. It is also about identity, love, separation, motherhood, and the difficult process of finding an independent life after years in someone else’s enormous shadow.
