Joey Feek – A Journey of Faith, Love, and Courage
Joey Feek was more than just a country music artist. She was a living testament to unwavering faith, pure love, and extraordinary courage. From a small-town girl in Indiana with big dreams, to a celebrated singer, devoted mother, and brave woman battling terminal illness, Joey’s life was a hymn of hope, resilience, and grace.
From Farm Girl to Musical Dreamer
Joey Marie Martin was born on September 9, 1975, in Alexandria, Indiana. Raised on a small farm in a faith-filled home, Joey was surrounded by love and the teachings of Christianity. From an early age, she showed a gift for music, inspired by legends like Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris. She sang in churches and local events, eventually following her dreams to Nashville, Tennessee.
A Love Story Born of Music – Meeting Rory Feek
In 2002, Joey met Rory Feek, a successful songwriter who had penned hits for country stars like Blake Shelton and Kenny Chesney. Their connection went beyond music—it was heartfelt and spiritual. The two married the same year and chose to pursue their musical dreams as a team, forming the duo Joey + Rory.
Joey + Rory – Finding Success Through Authenticity
In 2008, Joey + Rory competed on the reality show Can You Duet, capturing America’s heart with their honesty and old-fashioned charm. They finished in third place but gained national recognition. Their debut album The Life of a Song introduced their heartfelt style with the hit “Cheater, Cheater.” Rather than chasing fame, they stayed true to their roots—creating music centered around love, faith, and family.
A Miracle and a Challenge – The Birth of Indiana
After years of hoping, Joey gave birth to their daughter Indiana Boone Feek in 2014. Indiana was born with Down syndrome, a diagnosis that many would find daunting. But to Joey and Rory, she was a gift from God. Joey fully embraced motherhood, calling it her most important and cherished role.
The Cancer Battle – Faith Through the Storm
Just months after Indiana’s birth, Joey was diagnosed with cervical cancer. She underwent surgery and treatment, and for a time, there was hope. But in mid-2015, the cancer returned and spread. Joey received a terminal diagnosis.
Faced with a heartbreaking reality, Joey made a courageous and faith-filled decision: to stop treatment and focus on spending her remaining time at home with her family—soaking in every sunset, every hug, every moment of grace.
Final Days – A Life Well Lived
Joey chose to return to their Tennessee farmhouse to live out her last days surrounded by love. Rory documented their journey on his blog This Life I Live, sharing stories of sorrow, joy, and unwavering faith. Joey spent her final months cuddling with Indiana, singing hymns, and smiling through her pain.
In October 2015, Joey fulfilled one last dream—recording the album Hymns That Are Important To Us. From her hospice bed, she poured her soul into each song, leaving behind a legacy of worship and comfort.
On March 4, 2016, Joey Feek passed away at the age of 40. Her final words to Rory were, “I love you.”
A Lasting Legacy
Since her passing, Rory has continued to raise Indiana with deep love, ensuring that Joey’s spirit remains present in their lives. He continues to write and share their story—one of love, loss, and lasting faith.
The music of Joey + Rory lives on, touching hearts around the world. But Joey’s greatest legacy isn’t in charts or awards. It’s in how she lived—with intention, devotion, and belief.

Her story reminds us that true success is not measured by fame or fortune, but by the love we give and the lives we touch.
