“Leave It There” is a Christian hymn composed in 1916 by African-American Methodist minister Charles A. Tindley. The song encourages believers to trust in divine providence, drawing inspiration from biblical passages such as Psalm 55:22 and Matthew 11:28-30. Its enduring message has led to numerous recordings across various genres, including gospel, blues, and country.

In 2013, country music duo Joey + Rory included “Leave It There” on their album “Inspired: Songs of Faith & Family.” Their heartfelt rendition resonated with fans, reflecting their deep-rooted faith and commitment to traditional hymns. The song gained profound personal significance when Joey Feek, facing terminal cancer in 2016, requested that their friend, singer Bradley Walker, perform it at her funeral. This poignant moment not only honored Joey’s wishes but also highlighted the hymn’s comforting message during times of hardship.

Rory Feek’s connection to “Leave It There” continued as he supported Walker’s musical journey. Moved by Walker’s performance at Joey’s service, Rory collaborated with him on his album “Call Me Old-Fashioned,” released in 2016. This project, produced by Rory, featured a duet with Joey Feek on the track “In the Time That You Gave Me,” symbolizing the enduring bond forged through their shared faith and love for music.

“Leave It There” remains a testament to the power of faith and community, bridging generations and genres. Its message of surrendering burdens to a higher power continues to inspire and comfort listeners, exemplified by the heartfelt interpretations from artists like Rory Feek and Bradley Walker.

Lyrics

If the world from you withholds of its silver and its gold
And you have to get along with meager fare
Just remember, in his word, how he feeds the little bird
Take your burden to the Lord, leave it there
Leave it there, leave it there
Just take your burden to the Lord oh and leave it there
If you trust him through your doubt, he will surely bring you out
Take your burden to the Lord, leave it there
Now if your body suffers pain and your health you can’t regain
And your soul is slowly sinking in despair
Jesus knows the pain you feel, he can save and he can heal
Take your burden to the Lord, leave it there
Leave it there, leave it there
Just take your burden to the Lord oh and leave it there
If you trust him through your doubt, he will surely bring you out
Take your burden to the Lord, leave it there
Take your burden to the Lord
Leave it there
(Leave it there)
Leave it there
