Rory Feek and his wife Rebecca were on a bedroom floor, holding 12-year-old Indiana and begging her to wake up, only two weeks after open-heart surgery. Within hours, the child was life-flighted from Waco to Austin for emergency heart surgery.

# Rory Feek Shares Terrifying Ordeal as Daughter Indiana Undergoes Emergency Heart Surgery

What began as what seemed like a simple stomach bug quickly turned into one of the most frightening moments of Rory Feek’s life.

Just two weeks after 12-year-old Indiana Feek underwent successful open-heart surgery, Rory and his wife Rebecca found themselves kneeling on their bedroom floor, desperately trying to wake the young girl after she suddenly lost consciousness.

The evening had started with nothing more than a headache. By around 2 a.m., Indiana began vomiting repeatedly, leaving her weak and dizzy. Believing she had picked up a stomach virus, Rory and Rebecca cared for her as best they could. But while helping her back to bed from the bathroom, Indiana suddenly collapsed and became unresponsive.

Within minutes, paramedics rushed into the home before transporting her by ambulance to Providence Hospital in Waco. Looking back on those terrifying moments, Rory admitted they feared the unimaginable.

*”Neither Rebecca, nor I, have been as scared in our lives as we were that morning. We thought we had lost her,”* he shared.

Doctors quickly discovered the real cause of the emergency. An echocardiogram revealed a dangerous buildup of fluid around Indiana’s heart, preventing it from pumping normally. She was immediately airlifted to Dell Children’s Medical Center in Austin, while Rebecca—despite her fear of flying—accompanied Indiana aboard the helicopter. Rory followed behind by car, praying throughout the drive.

Specialists explained that inflammation from her recent heart surgery had caused excessive fluid to collect around her heart, a rare but serious postoperative complication. The condition had placed immense pressure on the organ, making it difficult for her heart to function properly.

Surgeons acted without delay.

During the emergency procedure, they drained an astonishing **610 cubic centimeters of fluid**, an amount doctors described as enormous. Medical imaging showed the area around her heart had swollen to nearly twice its normal size. Rory recalled doctors comparing the pressure to **”an elephant sitting on Indiana’s chest.”**

The results were immediate. As soon as the fluid was drained, Indiana’s heart rhythm returned to normal. Remarkably, later that same evening, she was asking for a ham-and-cheese omelet and a yogurt parfait—an encouraging sign that the crisis had passed.

Indiana’s heart journey began shortly after her birth in February 2014. Born with Down syndrome, she was diagnosed with a ventricular septal defect—a hole between the lower chambers of her heart. Doctors initially hoped the defect would close on its own, but as she grew older, it continued affecting her stamina and overall health.

Earlier this year, specialists determined surgery was necessary to protect both her quality of life and her future.

Although Indiana was understandably frightened before the operation, Rory said the family worked hard to prepare her emotionally. After a brief one-day delay, she underwent open-heart surgery on June 25. Before entering the operating room, she spent time playing Uno and caring for her favorite doll, Rosemary.

The operation was a success.

Rory later shared the joyful news every parent longs to hear:

*”The hole in her heart is closed, the blockages are cleared, and she should make a full recovery and live a full, long life.”*

Indiana recovered quickly and was able to return home after follow-up care. Friends and neighbors rallied around the family, preparing a safer bedroom and filling their refrigerator with meals. Hundreds of letters and cards poured in from supporters across the country, giving Indiana hours of happiness as she opened each one with her father.

Then came the unexpected setback.

Thankfully, only a day after the emergency surgery, Indiana was smiling once again. She spent her hospital stay playing Uno, coloring pictures, solving crossword puzzles, and opening care packages as doctors expressed confidence that she would make a full recovery and never experience the complication again.

For Rory, the experience carried a much deeper meaning. Having lost his wife Joey Feek to cancer in 2016, watching Indiana fight for her life brought back painful memories and served as a powerful reminder of how quickly life can change.

Today, Indiana’s heart is beating freely once again, her color has returned, and relief has replaced fear throughout the family. After one of the most frightening chapters they have ever faced, Rory, Rebecca, and Indiana are embracing every ordinary moment together with renewed gratitude—thankful for every breath, every prayer, and every new day.
