Believing she had picked up a stomach virus, Rory and Rebecca cared for her as best they could. But while helping her back to bed from the bathroom, Indiana suddenly collapsed and became unresponsive.
Within minutes, paramedics rushed into the home before transporting her by ambulance to Providence Hospital in Waco. Looking back on those terrifying moments, Rory admitted they feared the unimaginable.

Doctors quickly discovered the real cause of the emergency. An echocardiogram revealed a dangerous buildup of fluid around Indiana’s heart, preventing it from pumping normally. She was immediately airlifted to Dell Children’s Medical Center in Austin, while Rebecca—despite her fear of flying—accompanied Indiana aboard the helicopter. Specialists explained that inflammation from her recent heart surgery had caused excessive fluid to collect around her heart, a rare but serious postoperative complication. The condition had placed immense pressure on the organ, making it difficult for her heart to function properly.

Earlier this year, specialists determined surgery was necessary to protect both her quality of life and her future.
Although Indiana was understandably frightened before the operation, Rory said the family worked hard to prepare her emotionally. After a brief one-day delay, she underwent open-heart surgery on June 25. Before entering the operating room, she spent time playing Uno and caring for her favorite doll, Rosemary.
