“How Great Thou Art” is a renowned Christian hymn that has touched countless hearts since its inception. Originally penned in 1885 by Swedish pastor Carl Boberg as “O Store Gud,” the hymn underwent several translations and adaptations before becoming the English version widely cherished today. Its journey from a Swedish poem to a global anthem is a testament to its profound message and universal appeal.

In 2016, the American country and bluegrass duo Joey + Rory released their rendition of “How Great Thou Art” on their album “Hymns That Are Important to Us.” This album was particularly significant as it was recorded during a poignant period in their lives; Joey Feek was battling cervical cancer, which would later claim her life in March 2016. Despite her illness, Joey was determined to fulfill her dream of recording an album of her favorite hymns. The couple managed to complete the project, with Joey recording her vocals whenever her health permitted, sometimes even in hotel rooms during treatment.

Their rendition of “How Great Thou Art” stands out for its heartfelt simplicity and emotional depth. Joey’s soulful delivery, complemented by Rory’s harmonies, offers a moving interpretation that resonates deeply with listeners. The album achieved remarkable success, reaching the top position on both the Country Albums and Christian Albums charts, and peaking at number four on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart.

The hymn itself has a rich history, having been translated into multiple languages and embraced by various cultures. Its English version was popularized by British missionary Stuart K. Hine, who expanded upon the original text during his missionary work in Eastern Europe. Over the years, “How Great Thou Art” has been covered by numerous artists across different genres, each bringing their unique touch to this timeless piece.

Joey + Rory’s rendition serves as a poignant reminder of the hymn’s enduring power and the personal stories it continues to inspire. Their performance not only honors the hymn’s legacy but also encapsulates their unwavering faith and love during life’s most challenging moments.

Lyrics

O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder,
Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art
When through the woods, and forest glades I wander,
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees
When I look down, from lofty mountain grandeur
And see the brook, and feel the gentle breeze
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art
And when I think, that God, His Son not sparing;
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in
That on the Cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art
When Christ shall come, with shout of acclamation,
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart
Then I shall bow, in humble adoration,
And then proclaim My God, how great Thou art
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, how great Thou art
Then sings my soul, My Savior God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art
