Rory Feek: Raising His Daughter With Down Syndrome

Introduction

Rory Lee Feek, born April 25, 1965, is an American country singer-songwriter best known as one half of the duo Joey + Rory, formed with his wife Joey Feek in 2008 after their third‑place finish on CMT’s Can You Duet . Already an accomplished songwriter—penning Blake Shelton’s #1 “Some Beach,” among others—Rory embraced the spotlight alongside Joey as they released eight studio albums together .

In February 2014, the couple welcomed their daughter, Indiana Boone “Indy” Feek, who was born with Down syndrome . Joey and Rory had paused their touring to focus on home life with their newborn. Soon after, Joey was diagnosed with cervical cancer, and despite initial optimism, she passed away on March 4, 2016, when Indy was just two years old . In the face of profound loss, Joey’s final act of love—to entrust mothering Indy to Rory—became a guiding legacy .

In rare public reflections, Rory has shared how Joey laid the foundation for Indy’s upbringing, from early intervention therapies to homeschooling in a one-room schoolhouse on their farm . He describes Indy as bright, affectionate, and entirely typical in her spirit—counter to the low expectations he initially encountered from others . Together, they navigated the challenges and joys of her condition—speech and physical therapy, education, and the day-to-day farm life that Joey deeply cherished .

Through his blog This Life I Live, bestselling memoirs, a docu-series, and music projects, Rory has lovingly chronicled raising Indy alone—and their continuing bond to Joey. Today, Indy remains his greatest blessing, a testament to resilience, faith, and a father’s unwavering devotion.
