Rory Feek – To Do What I Do

Introduction

Rory Feek, born April 25, 1965, in Atchison, Kansas, has built a multifaceted career as both a country music songwriter and performer . Before finding widespread recognition as one half of the Grammy-winning duo Joey + Rory (2008–2016), he penned significant hits for artists like Collin Raye’s “Someone You Used to Know,” Clay Walker’s “The Chain of Love,” and Blake Shelton’s chart‑topper “Some Beach” . Forming Joey + Rory with his wife Joey in 2008, the pair emerged as a heartfelt, authentic voice in country and bluegrass music, earning critical acclaim—including a Grammy nod after Joey’s passing in 2016 .

Following Joey’s death from metastatic cervical cancer in March 2016, Rory continued to honor their legacy through music, storytelling, and memoirs—like This Life I Live—while raising their daughter, Indiana . In a poignant new chapter, he remarried Indiana’s former teacher, Rebecca, on July 14, 2024, in Greycliff, Montana. At their wedding, Rory surprised Rebecca—and all attendees—with an original song and performance entitled “I Do”, showcasing his enduring devotion and artistry .

“To Do What I Do” itself appears on The Singer and the Song: The Best of Joey + Rory, originally released in October 2018. This compilation celebrates the duo’s career, with this track reflecting Rory’s signature blend of sincerity and earthy storytelling . Though less widely discussed than “I Do,” “To Do What I Do” captures the essence of Feek’s musical identity—heartfelt lyrics paired with simple acoustic country melodies, steeped in authenticity and a sense of lived experience.

In crafting this song, Feek draws from his journey—from Marine Corps service and songwriting in Nashville to his celebrated partnership with Joey, and into life anew with Rebecca. Through “To Do What I Do,” listeners are offered an invitation into that narrative: a story of love, loss, faith, and the enduring power of music.
