A Tender Father-Daughter Duet: Rory Feek and Indy’s “PAPA WHAT IF”

“Papa What If” is a heartfelt duet by country musician Rory Feek and his daughter, Indiana (Indy), released in 2023. This rendition reimagines Shel Silverstein’s 1974 song “Daddy What If,” originally performed by Bobby Bare and his son. In Rory and Indy’s version, “Daddy” is replaced with “Papa,” reflecting Indy’s affectionate term for her father.

The song unfolds as a tender exchange between a curious child and her father, with Indy posing imaginative “what if” questions and Rory responding with gentle reassurance. This dialogue captures the innocence of childhood and the comforting presence of a parent. The acoustic arrangement, featuring soft guitar strumming, complements their voices, creating an intimate and warm atmosphere.

The inspiration for this duet stems from Rory’s own childhood memories of singing “Daddy What If” with his father. He previously performed the song with his older daughter, Heidi, and later introduced it to Indy by illustrating the lyrics with drawings to help her learn her parts. Their collaboration culminated in a music video filmed on their farm, showcasing their close bond and shared love for music.

Following the passing of Rory’s wife, Joey Feek, in 2016, he embraced single fatherhood with devotion. “Papa What If” stands as a testament to the enduring connection between Rory and Indy, highlighting the healing power of music and the strength of familial love. The song has resonated with audiences, serving as a poignant reminder of the special moments shared between parents and children.
