“Merry Christmas, Darling” is a cherished holiday classic by the Carpenters, showcasing the duo’s signature blend of heartfelt lyrics and melodic composition. The song’s origins trace back to 1946 when Frank Pooler, then an 18-year-old college student, penned the lyrics about a love interest he was separated from during the Christmas season. Despite his efforts, the song remained unpublished for two decades.

In 1966, Pooler, serving as the choral director at California State University, Long Beach, shared these lyrics with his students, Richard and Karen Carpenter. Seeking fresh holiday material beyond traditional carols, Richard composed a new melody for Pooler’s words in just 15 minutes. The Carpenters performed the song at various events over the next few years.

Following their breakthrough success with hits like “Close to You” and “We’ve Only Just Begun,” the Carpenters recorded “Merry Christmas, Darling” in 1970. Released as a single on November 20, it quickly resonated with audiences, reaching number one on Billboard’s Christmas singles chart that year, a position it reclaimed in 1971 and 1973.

The song’s enduring appeal is largely attributed to Karen Carpenter’s warm, emotive vocals, which beautifully convey the longing and affection embedded in the lyrics. In 1978, at Karen’s request, she re-recorded the lead vocal for inclusion in their holiday album, “Christmas Portrait,” further solidifying its place in the pantheon of Christmas music.

Over the years, “Merry Christmas, Darling” has been covered by various artists, including Amy Grant, Lea Michele in the television series “Glee,” and Lennon Stella for Amazon Music’s Originals playlist in 2020, commemorating the song’s 50th anniversary.

Decades after its initial release, “Merry Christmas, Darling” remains a beloved holiday staple, evoking the timeless sentiments of love and togetherness during the festive season.
