By the time Elvis Presley reached his early forties, the life he had built was becoming increasingly difficult for him to endure. His days and nights no longer followed the rhythms most people take for granted. Sleep could be elusive, physical discomfort was an ongoing problem, and the demands of touring left limited opportunities for recovery. He had spent more than two decades living under extraordinary public expectations, moving between recording sessions, film sets, concert venues, and a home that was rarely entirely private. People still wanted the handsome, energetic performer they remembered from 1956 or 1969. But Elvis was no longer that young man. His health was deteriorating, and the distance between what audiences expected and what he could physically manage was becoming painfully apparent.
