“Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus,” originally titled “The Heavenly Vision,” is a cherished Christian hymn penned by Helen Howarth Lemmel in 1918. Born in 1864 in Wardle, England, Lemmel was the daughter of a Methodist minister and displayed musical talent from an early age. Her family immigrated to the United States when she was twelve, where she continued to cultivate her passion for music, eventually composing over 500 hymns throughout her lifetime.

The inspiration for this particular hymn struck when a missionary friend handed Lemmel a pamphlet titled “Focused,” authored by Isabella Lilias Trotter, an English artist and missionary to Algeria. A specific line from the tract resonated deeply with Lemmel: “Turn your eyes upon Him, look full into His face, and you will find that the things of earth will acquire a strange new dimness.” Reflecting on this moment, Lemmel recounted, “Suddenly, as if commanded to stop and listen, I stood still, and singing in my soul and spirit was the chorus.” She proceeded to compose the verses within the same week, attributing the creation to divine inspiration.

The hymn was first published as a pamphlet in London in 1918 and later included in Lemmel’s 1922 collection, “Glad Songs.” Its popularity soared after being introduced at the Keswick Bible Conference in northern England, leading to its inclusion in numerous hymnals and translations worldwide.

Decades later, country music artist Alan Jackson recorded his rendition of “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus” for his 2006 gospel album, “Precious Memories.” This project was deeply personal for Jackson, as it was initially intended as a tribute to his mother and later inspired by his father-in-law’s funeral. The album features traditional hymns that were significant to Jackson’s upbringing, reflecting his roots and faith.

Jackson’s heartfelt interpretation of “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus” introduces this timeless hymn to a contemporary audience, bridging generations through its enduring message of faith and focus on the divine.
