URGENT PRAYERS NEEDED: The Frightening Medical Emergency That Brought Rory Feek’s Family to Their Knees
Some stories begin with music. Others begin with a prayer.
In July 2026, Rory Feek shared a frightening account involving his 12-year-old daughter, Indiana, following her open-heart surgery. Indiana had been born with a ventricular septal defect, a hole between the chambers of her heart that doctors had monitored for years. In June, she underwent surgery in Austin, Texas, and her family was initially able to return home after doctors said she was doing well.
Then, after about a week in Waco, everything changed.
Rory wrote that Indiana developed a headache and later began vomiting during the night. When he and Rebecca realized how serious the situation had become, they rushed her for emergency medical attention. Doctors discovered that fluid had accumulated around Indiana’s heart, restricting its ability to beat properly. She was airlifted back to Dell Children’s Medical Center in Austin, where physicians performed an emergency procedure to drain the fluid. Rory later described those moments as terrifying, saying that he and Rebecca were crying and desperately trying to wake Indiana.
Rebecca, Rory’s wife and Indiana’s former teacher, stayed beside the family during the crisis. Rory’s account describes her overcoming her fear of heights to accompany Indiana during the helicopter transfer.
Thankfully, subsequent reports said Indiana was recovering, while Rory expressed gratitude for the doctors, nurses, and countless people who offered prayers and encouragement.
This is not simply a story about fear. It is a story about family, faith, medicine, and the fragile gift of another day. For Rory, the experience became a powerful reminder to cherish every breath and never take life for granted.
